Have you ever bought antivirus software and wished that you could erase all of the damage that malware and viruses have already caused to your system? Well, one company is trying to solve that problem by offering its internet security software on a portable CD that you can install on all of your computers. The company calls it the AVG Rescue CD, and it is a free download on the AVG website.
AVG's Toolkit
AVG Rescue CD is what AVG Anti-Virus – which is distributed through Linux – calls its toolkit. A network administrator can use it to run a system recovery for Windows XP and newer Windows operating systems, as well as Linux operating systems. The CD also works for Windows 2003 servers through Windows 2008 Server x64 Edition. You can use AVG Rescue CD to repair damaged machines after a viral attack and to allow the system to restart using a USB stick or CD.
This CD is intended for computers that most people would consider dead, meaning that the computer won't boot up or function at all. The AVG toolkit includes a two-panel file manager, a registry editor, along with servers, IP and domain tests and a new copy of basic Linux software.
Using the AVG Rescue CD
If you're a little lost when it comes to computer repair, never fear because AVG Rescue CD has free all-hours support, an online FAQ page and a forum for users who own an AVG product. If you don't own an AVG product, don't worry; the process is simple.
- Download the AVG Rescue CD information to a CD or USB stick using another, undamaged computer.
- Insert the CD or USB stick into the damaged computer.
- Restart the computer by holding down the power button; this is known as a hard boot.
- When a black screen with words appears, quickly press the F8 key to bring up the boot menu. The key you need to press may be different, depending on your system, however, so look at the options displayed on the black screen.
- A menu will pop up asking you where you want to boot from. The choices will be hard drive, CD-ROM, removable device or boot from network. If you have your AVG Rescue CD on a CD, choose CD-ROM. If you have your AVG Rescue CD on a USB stick, choose the removable device option. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight the choice you want and press the Enter key on your keyboard to select one.
- When the welcome screen appears, press Enter.
- Read and agree to the licensing agreement by scrolling down with your arrow keys and pressing the Enter key.
- Next, you will be asked if you want to update AVG. Select Yes with the arrow keys and press Enter.
- On the next screen, choose to update the software from the internet using the arrow keys and press Enter.
- Select Default Priority 2.
- Launch the update by selecting Yes and pressing Enter.
- Once the update is finished, press any key on your keyboard and then press Enter on the next screen.
- On the following screen, choose Return and press Enter.
- Now you will be given a list of options to clean up and restore your computer. Simply scroll between options such as using your antivirus software and configuring your network with the arrow keys on your keyboard and follow the on-screen directions presented to you.
