Beware of Strange Security Updates

As our world and lives continue to migrate more and more into cyberspace, it’s important to remember that for all the wonder that technology provides, there are also some dangers. Whether it’s seemingly harmless spyware, vicious worms, sneaky Trojans or any other kind of malware, making sure your antivirus software is current and potent is essential. As people have become more adept at filtering harmful material away from their computers, virus developers have also become more skilled at infiltrating our electronic devices. One of the sneakiest methods is with fake security software updates.

Security updates are how companies in the internet-security business make sure their products are up to date and on the cutting edge. These companies want you to have the best protection possible, and they provide it through security updates. Why do they use updates? Well, for a few reasons.

First, exploits are being discovered all the time, and security companies need to be able to patch fixes into their antivirus software. Hackers can learn how to work around certain parts of security software and the ability to download and install a security update can cut them off at the pass. Second, online threats are always changing and evolving, so security updates help to ensure that your online security changes and evolves alongside them.

While there are many ways for hackers to infiltrate your computer’s security, there are only a few practical ways to go about doing so. In most cases, dedicated and thorough hacking attempts are only directed at large financial institutions or companies that run databases that store copious amounts of sensitive user data. However, if scammers can trick you into downloading malware to your computer with a mass-delivery system that requires minimal effort on their part, they often try it out to see who falls into the trap.

That’s why it’s important to look at every update before you download and install it. Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of a fake update.

  1. Do not trust pop-ups. If you get a pop-up telling you to download and install a security update, don’t take it for granted that it’s legitimate. If you received a pop-up from your financial institution telling you to type in your account and routing numbers, would you do it? Of course not. That’s not to say that you should simply disregard pop-ups, but do a little research before you commit.
  2. Get your security updates directly from the official site. Sounds simple and obvious, right? After all, if there is an actual security update, the official site will at least confirm that you aren’t being duped. Downloading security updates from another site can be unnecessarily risky, so don't risk it.
  3. Use caution and common sense. The best way to avoid fake security updates is to be educated and prepared. Read up on the subject occasionally and be careful when clicking on unknown links, especially on social networking sites. Don’t open emails from people you don’t know and use a firewall. Taking simple measures will protect you from attacks.
