No matter what the appliance, it never fails that something will break down, and when one thing breaks down, there is usually something else to follow. Many times when something is broken or not working correctly we do our best to fix it ourselves. But in some instances the battle isn’t worth it and we call a professional repair person to take the non-working device directly to the repair shop, or toss it out with the week’s garbage and purchase another similar item that works. The money we spend to fix appliances is sometimes better spent on buying something brand new and up to date.
If you are a fix it yourself person many appliances can be easily repaired, including a computer. Many computer performance problems can be solved without taking the computer to the computer repair shop or calling technical support. Often times, problems with a computer can be alleviated by simply rebooting the computer. Rebooting allows the computer to free up some memory and other system resources. Secondly, check for errors on the computer. An error check will test for and repair any corrupt system files. This will also detect and attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard disk drive. Another way to fix a problematic computer is to check for device driver updates. Device drivers are located on the hard drive. Device drivers communicate with other resources on the computer. If you keep these devices updated with the latest version of the driver, then problems related to device performance may greatly improve. Sometimes computer repair may be as easy as looking at the power cords and cables. Make sure that all of the power cords and cables are connected and in good condition.
If anything is loose, tighten the connection. If there are any significant signs of wear and tear of the cables such as stretched wires, bent connectors, or naked wires - get them replaced. Lastly, computer repair sometimes requires device replacement. If you receive device errors or you have a device that is unresponsive, it may be time to replace the device. Before doing this observe how the old device connects. Once you are confident that you know how everything is connected, disconnect the old device. Next, turn off the computer and connect the new device, then turn the power back on to the computer. The computer should recognize the new device; however, if it doesn’t use the “install new hardware” wizard that is available on many computers to fully install the new device.
Many computers are found to be inoperable or they are just performing slowly because of a computer virus and/or malware. To prevent problems such as these, install yourself a good antivirus software on your computer. There are several good antivirus programs on the market today. Many of these antivirus programs are free, so there is no reason for you not to protect your computer against things such as spyware and other potential viruses that may harm your computer and the information on your computer.
So remember, before you make a service call or take your computer to a professional computer repair shop, trouble shoot the problem first. Chances are you can fix the problem yourself, and as with any appliance, it is important to perform routine maintenance on your computer. Preventative measures which can detect problems at an early stage will save you headaches, time and money.
