Author by

PROS / F-Secure has a pre-installation scan to remove infections from your computer before it installs the main application.

CONS / It had more false positives in recent AV-Test scores than the industry average.

VERDICT / Good protection and a sleek interface help make F-Secure Anti-Virus one of best antivirus software products.

F-Secure Anti-Virus is among the best antivirus software applications. It is sleek, fast and effective. With advanced protection technology and additional integrated security features, F-Secure protects against viruses, spyware, worms and Trojans. F-Secure can also locate and eliminate rootkits. This antivirus software also protects against viruses spread through emails, cookies or malware that attempts to infiltrate the Windows registry.

The respected testing lab AV-Test places F-Secure among the leaders when it comes to performance, although it lagged some of the applications the lab tested when it came to distinguishing between legitimate software and malware while performing a system scan. For example, F-Secure had four false positives, which is more than the industry average of two. This contributed to its lower usability score from AV-Test.

Installing this software is straightforward. It automatically removes other antivirus software on your computer and scans for viruses before installation. This is the only antivirus software in our review to offer a pre-installation scan, which is particularly helpful if your computer has an existing infection. The software is resource-conscious, but it doesn't perform quite as well as higher-ranked products in our review, earning only a B grade in our resource use tests.

Anti-Virus from F-Secure offers simple navigation and makes it easy to schedule specific scans or adjust settings. The main dashboard features quick access to scans, tools and statistics. Most of the time, F-Secure updates and runs scans automatically. It uses a protection network, DeepGuard 2.0, which collects new threats in the cloud and pushes out updates to the entire user community.

This application uses proactive protection against zero-day threats that are undetectable by current virus signatures. You can perform a manual scan on a specific file or folder by right-clicking on it and selecting the option to scan. F-Secure can scan compressed files as well as files on USB drives. You can set the software to automatically clean infections or put them in quarantine. Files in quarantine can’t do damage, so you can decide whether to keep or delete them.

You can contact technical support by phone on weekdays or you can talk to a representative over email and live chat. Our installation test revealed that the software doesn't require a restart during either installation or uninstallation, which is a nice step to skip. Unfortunately, because the software downloads its files during the process, it took over 24 minutes to install on our test computer, longer than the majority of products in our review.

F-Secure Anti-Virus is beneficial in quite a few ways. It protects PCs from viruses, spyware and other sorts of malware that seek to attack your computer with intent to harm. It updates itself automatically. It does not slow down your system too much. The software takes a long time to install, but it's not enough of a reason to pass on excellent antivirus software.
