When it comes to antivirus software, the difference between Apple computers and PCs can be as stark as night and day. Macs computers appeal to a niche market with a far smaller user base than Windows PCs have. There are similarly fewer dangerous software applications and viruses for Macs. The stringent security measures Apple employs, as well as a history of secrecy surrounding the code underlying its products, have made Mac virus prevention far less common than protection for PCs. This raises several questions among the Apple community with regard to guarding these computers against hazardous malware.
- Is antivirus software necessary for a Mac?
Most Mac users do not employ protective software. The most common causes of Mac virus infections can be traced back to user error. Downloading illegal material is the most common source of Mac virus infections. Dangerous malware is often folded into downloads of copyrighted material, illicit software or counterfeit materials. These are the most common sources of infection. While it is not strictly necessary for you to have Mac virus protection, it is still advisable to have software available for an occasional virus scan, simply to avoid potential threats.
- Are there viruses that are specific to Macs?
There is no exact answer to this question, partially due to the ambiguity of the word virus. A Mac virus doesn’t really exist because such malware affects a computer's operating system (OS), not the computer itself. Several harmful types of malware including spyware, Trojans and others do target the Apple OS, however.
- Why are Macs safer?
Mac Virus protection is not as necessary because of the overall structure of Mac operating systems. Unlike Windows computers, software must have access to a Mac's root directory before it can make changes to the overall structure and function of the system. Mac viruses require much more programming to accomplish this task, and are therefore significantly harder to produce.
Macs also do not have a basic default structure that can be exploited in the same way that Windows computers can, as its OS is based around a set of user preferences that alter the way the system operates. Therefore, a Mac virus that harms one computer might not work on the exact same model running the exact same OS because the internal structure would be different based on the preferences used when the computer was set up.
- What is the best protection for Macs?
While security software is not necessary, using it is still useful, and choosing the right application is very important. When a Mac does become infected, the infection is much deeper and more powerful than one that overruns a PC. Most of the same big names in PC protection also have applications for Macs. Using Kaspersky for Macs, Norton for Macs or BitDefender for Macs will provide ample coverage against infection, although the most useful is Intego VirusBarrier, partly because it focuses on the unique structure of Macs more than the others do.
The internet can be a source of as much danger as wonder, no matter what kind of computer you use. Macs suffer from far fewer issues resulting from infection by hazardous software and often provide a safer experience overall, but every iteration brings new dangers and new challenges, so choosing the right software for protection can bring peace of mind, even if the protection is not strictly necessary.
