Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft has revamped and re-released their Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) antivirus software, which now includes many new and effective features. This software is the latest version of Microsoft’s Forefront Endpoint Protection software and replaces Microsoft's Live OneCare. The new MSE antivirus software provides improved protection for your computer and is available for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

New Features

Most antivirus software requires periodic updates that must be scheduled during times when your computer is running or that require you to update the software manually to ensure that it has the most recent antivirus information. Updates for Microsoft Security Essentials are included with regular Windows Updates that run almost daily. Therefore, MSE ensures that you have the most up-to-date antivirus protection available.

Another benefit to Microsoft Security Essentials is that it runs quietly in the background, unlike other antivirus software that often displays annoying pop-up windows every time it scans your computer. MSE only displays pop-ups if it needs you to perform an action, such as when it detects a threat.

MSE uses Microsoft’s Dynamic Signature Service as well as a heuristic scanning engine to detect malware. This is another way in which this antivirus software provides protection without requiring you to make sure that you have updated your antivirus software recently. Microsoft Security Essentials offers real-time and on-demand scanning, and it works more closely with Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer than previous antivirus software produced by Microsoft. MSE's integration with Internet Explorer allows for better antivirus protection against web threats, which is a problem that Microsoft has needed to address for some time.

Other Benefits

Microsoft Security Essentials' user interface is surprisingly simple and offers a variety of settings that even novice users can understand. Installation is quick and does not require you to restart your computer. However, you must uninstall any other antivirus software before downloading Microsoft Security Essentials.

Once you have installed MSE antivirus software, a color-coded icon will appear in your computer's system tray. A green icon indicates that your computer is protected and malware free. A yellow icon indicates that the antivirus protection is fair, and a red icon indicates that your system is at risk. If the icon turns red, a pop-up window will appear that explains the threat and recommends a specific action to eliminate it. MSE's instructions are simple and easy to understand.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free for licensed Windows users and requires no registration. Home and small business users may download versions of the software on as many computers as they wish, and there is no push to upgrade to a paid version of the software because all versions of this antivirus software are free.

Microsoft Security Essentials improves antivirus protection for home and small business users with an upgraded heuristic scanning engine and Microsoft’s Dynamic Signature Service. The fact that MSE is free antivirus software with almost daily updates is definitely a benefit for people who are less vigilant about their antivirus protection and tend not to download the most recent updates. The fact that this software is simple to use is an attractive bonus as well.
