AVG is a huge name in the antivirus industry. AVG produces two types of products when it comes to antivirus software. The first is its paid version, which is one of the most highly rated antivirus software suites for its scope of protection and speed, according to professional reviewers. This software pack costs about $35 to purchase and protects you from about 99 percent of all types of malware.
The second type is the AVG Free version. This version offers nearly all the same features as the paid version, but the quality and scope of protection is slightly degraded – leaving you vulnerable to spyware, Trojans and viruses.
Many people opt for the free version of the AVG software. They feel that this free software is good enough and that if they use internet-savvy judgment when surfing the web and downloading questionable files, and this free antivirus software, they will be protected to a large degree. AVG 9.0 is one of the most popular and widely downloaded free versions of AVG software. AVG 9.0 was released a few years ago. Since then, AVG has released two more iterations of its free antivirus software pack, making AVG 11 the most current suite available.
However, AVG 9.0 is notorious for being incredibly difficult to uninstall from your computer. There is one main reason for this, and that is that AVG, like almost every other antivirus software manufacturer, does not want to make it easy for you to uninstall its software. AVG wants to keep its files on your PC, fresh in your mind, so that you’ll hopefully upgrade to the paid version. This isn’t exactly the best business practice, but it’s a keystone in the antivirus software industry. Yet, with a little know-how, you can completely remove AVG 9.0 from your PC. Here’s how:
Window’s Add/Remove Programs Will Not Uninstall AVG 9.0
If you haven't already tried to uninstall AVG 9.0, you may be thinking, what’s the big deal? Can’t I just get rid of the software through Window’s Add and Remove Programs icon on the control panel? This simple solution will not work. Try it and your system will just throw up one of two errors: “Local machine installation failed” or “Installer Initialization Failed.” In the rare chance that Window’s add and remove programs solution seems to work, you’ll soon find several remaining files and extensions from AVG 9.0 sprinkled throughout your computer.
Manually Uninstall AVG 9.0
Although some users find it difficult, manually uninstalling AVG 9.0 should be very simple, according to AVG. All you need to do is visit AVG’s website and download the appropriate, free AVG 9.0 installation tool, either for a 32-bit or 64-bit personal computer. Download and run the program, and then restart your computer. After the restart, delete the following files:
For Windows XP & 2000 Versions:
C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS)
C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\AVG9
Windows Vista and 7 Versions:
C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS)
C:\ProgramData\AVG9
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\AVG9
And that’s that – AVG 9.0 should be completely removed from your PC. If you’re highly technically challenged and these instructions seem overwhelming, there is uninstaller software you can buy to do the legwork for you. However, these applications will cost you somewhere between $20 and $40.
