Yellowbook is one of many hoax anti-virus applications on the internet. This fake software, with the help of Trojan malware technology, tricks users into downloading it in the hopes of making a quick buck. Here's how the Yellowbook software scam works:
- A pop-up window that looks exactly like a regular anti-virus warning screen appears on the victim's screen.
- The pop-up tells the victim that the computer is infected with viruses and that the infection poses a threat to the system.
- The pop-up urges the victim to download free software to get rid of the infection.
- The victim downloads the free software and it supposedly clears up the infection.
- When the computer restarts, the Yellowbook software will open before the computer can even accesses the desktop.
- The fake software will not let the user access the desktop until another scan is completed.
- After the second scan, the software alerts the victim of another virus threat, but this time it informs the user that only an upgraded version of the free software can destroy this new threat. Of course, the upgraded version will cost the victim. This is how the creator of the hoax software makes money.
While the messages all look very convincing, the infections are all fake. In fact, the free software is an infection. Yellowbook slows down the computer, spawns more pop-up windows and disables any real security software on the computer.
Getting rid of Yellowbook isn't as easy as getting rid of other malware threats. Since it disables other security software, you won't be able to wipe it out by simply running a system scan. Here are some easy steps to getting rid of Yellowbook for good:
- Restart your computer.
- While your computer is booting, press the F8 button to access the Boot Menu.
- Highlight the Safe Mode option in the menu by using the arrow keys on your keyboard.
- Press the Enter button on your keyboard. Using your computer while it is in Safe Mode will prevent Yellowbook from disabling your security software.
- Open your security software.
- Run a complete scan of all your drives, including any external drives.
- Use your security software to delete the Yellowbook files.
- Restart your computer. It is fine to start it in its normal working mode.
If you don't have security software already downloaded to your computer, you will need to buy a version that comes on a CD. Yellowbook will block any sites that sell security software from your browser, so you won't be able to download software from the internet.
The Yellowbook scam is just another elaborate way to scam people out of money. Be smart. Don't purchase the upgraded version of this software. Delete the menace before it ruins the speed of your computer and allows other threats to attack your system. Once the deletion is complete, avoid any free software introduced to you by pop-ups, emails or internet ads.
