ViRobot Desktop from Hauri is a fairly weak antivirus program; missing several features and lacking much usability. We definitely don’t recommend the software, especially when there are several top-notch antivirus programs available.
ViRobot Desktop falls short of covering your PC completely. The software is equipped to protect from viruses, Trojans, worms and other malware. And technically the software detects and defends from some spyware, keyloggers, adware, and other unwanted programs. But Hauri admits that for comprehensive protection from all of these threats, you’ll need to utilize another spyware specific program.
We can’t attest to the effectiveness of ViRobot, but can only refer to the fact that Hauri ViRobot has failed most of the VB100 (Virus Bulletin) tests, and haven’t passed since 2003.
ViRobot installs with the traditional Windows process, and asks you if you’d like to scan the current running processes before installing. The software didn’t take too long to install, and only required one restart.
ViRobot isn’t difficult to maneuver, but it certainly isn’t the easiest antivirus software either. The interface is pretty basic, and the tabbed interface makes it easy to find what you’re looking for. One thing that caught us off guard (not bad, just noticeable) was that opening the settings brought up a whole new program window.
Unfortunately, ViRobot is bound to slow you down a bit, especially when running a computer scan. We noticed some system impact, and in our tests found it running at over 75MB (compared to some of the much faster engines that run on 30MB or less).
ViRobot Desktop has some basic utility, and a few nice features. One nice feature is the ability to set a password so no one can tamper with your settings.
ViRobot has the ability to scan compressed files, external drives, and you can specify which files to scan (or exclude). The software includes a sterile quarantine where detected files that can’t be automatically fixed are stored while you decide whether to restore or delete the file.
The software also includes a system cleaner tool, which can help you easily remove old files and your internet traces (cookies, temporary internet files, files in recycle bin, registry, and even your media playlist).
ViRobot makes sure it’s up to date with the most current virus definitions while it installs, and regularly updates itself automatically. The software checks for updates every 4 hours. You can also run a manual scan at any time from the software.
You can find help online for ViRobot through the product manual or searchable FAQ section. Personalized questions can be directed to Hauri through email. The program itself has a link to the online support center (though it requires that you set your pop-up blocker to allow it).
Hauri ViRobot Desktop is a lackluster antivirus program that just doesn’t cut it in terms of protection or professional implementation. We certainly recommend anyone looking for the right antivirus software look at some of the best software included in our lineup of the best antivirus programs.
