Cyber warfare involves politically motivated hacking in an act to conduct espionage and/or sabotage . Government security experts describe cyber warfare as actions by a nation or state used to penetrate another nation’s computers or networks for the purpose of causing damage and/or disruption.
Espionage and sabotage are the two most common methods of attack. Cyber espionage is the act or practice of obtaining secrets from enemies, rivals, groups, governments and competitors. These secrets may be classified, sensitive, or proprietary information and are usually exploited on the internet, various networks and through software. Sabotage occurs when orders and/or communications are intercepted or replaced. Power companies, water companies, fuel companies, communication agencies, transportation agencies, and the military are all very vulnerable to being sabotaged. Many of us as civilians are also at risk for being sabotaged or we have already been victims if we have had our credit card numbers stolen and/or our social security numbers. Anytime this private information is exposed and someone else uses it to their advantage, we are victims and we are being sabotaged. Sabotage also occurs when a computer virus infiltrates a computer. In 2010, a malicious software program infiltrated some factory computers and the virus spread to other factories around the world.
So why does cyber warfare occur? Like everything, cyber warfare is motivated; however, the motivations behind cyber warfare depend on the person or thing that will be affected by cyber warfare. Military security personnel have designed a program that combats cyber warfare known as Cyber Command. Cyber Command attempts to find and neutralize cyber attacks. Cyber Command also works and defends the computer before there are any viruses and/or threats actually on the computer. The military isn’t the only agency at risk of cyber warfare, civil personnel are also risk. Everyone with a computer is at risk for cyber warfare. Computers connected to the internet are at a high risk for being affected and getting a virus. That is why it is very important to install a good antivirus program on your computer to defend and protect against other viruses and potential hackers. Computer hacking is a modern threat and occurs all of the time; however, it is a crime that most often goes unreported and there are millions that are affected daily.
Whether you are in the military’s civil or private sector, understand that cyber warfare is always something to be worried about. There are always outsiders looking for a way to hack into your computer and gain your personnel information for their benefit. Military agencies, government agencies, and other public sectors often have the most up-to-date security and antivirus software on their computers which help to defend against cyber attacks. For private use there are several free antivirus programs on the market that are great at defending against viruses and spyware. Let’s all stay protected from cyber warfare.
