Why Update My Antivirus Software?

Life in the world today seems to move at the speed of light; perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the high-tech electronics industry. The internet, too, has changed our lives in so many ways, and it is still fluidly changing every day. If you are younger than 30 years old, you might find it hard to imagine a world without Facebook, Google or Yahoo.

The World Wide Web is just one example. Consider how quickly cell phones turned into smartphones with built-in cameras, global positioning systems (GPS) and internet connectivity.

What does all this have to do with why you should update your anti-virus software? Well, think of it as a game of cops and robbers. Each of these seemingly polar opposites has to stay current on what the other is doing – its methods, its procedures and, perhaps most importantly, its changes. If either one fails to update its techniques, it could find itself in big trouble.

The same holds true for your computer system, regardless of whether you have a PC or a Mac.

If you have anti-virus software, whether you paid for it or downloaded free software, you really have to update it continuously. You can be sure that the nefarious programmers who create computer viruses are doing everything they can to update their insidious malware, which is software such as viruses or Trojans deliberately designed to damage or disrupt computer systems. If you don't keep your anti-virus software up to date, malware will surpass your security software's ability to contain it.

Anti-virus software developers habitually update their software's virus signature files and individual applications. It is quite easy for you to check to see that your anti-virus software is up to date.

Go to the vendor's website about once a week or once every two weeks for an update or updates. Many anti-virus software applications have an update application built into them. Often, these applications have a feature that prompts you to download an update when it becomes accessible.

When it comes to running a system scan, the majority of computer users typically perform this operation once, right after they install anti-virus software. Once they have done that, an update completed by the user is rare; however, the antivirus software continues to hang out on their computer system, where it will go on scanning downloads, emails and other possible starting places of infection.

Even so, if your anti-virus software is running in the memory part of your computer system, you ought to seriously consider performing a total and complete update via a system scan at least once each month. Also, look for any information regarding major updates to the software application, especially if your computer system begins to behave in a strange manner.

If you have an anti-virus software application and you do not run it in your computer system's memory, perhaps because your computer has only a small or limited amount of RAM, you will most likely need to execute a total system scan on a much more frequent basis, most effectively at least once every week.
